Civilian militias ambush cop in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Zamboanga del Sur – A member of the Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) and a civilian community peace volunteer, ambushed a police officer in Barangay Parangbasak, Lamitan City, on Friday afternoon, police said.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. as Police Staff Sgt. Jun Jabbal Arasal was driving past the village going to Ungkaya Pukan town when met with a volley of fires, said Colonel Arlan Delumpines, city police director of Lamitan,

Arasal, a member of the Isabela City Police Office, was traveling with his two cousins who were unharmed from the attack. Arsal, meanwhile, was hurt from shattered glass as a bullet pierced through his vehicle’s windshield.

Arasal identified the suspects as Lipunan Docol, a member of the CAFGU, and Lim Amaran, a member of the civilian volunteer organization in Parangbasak village.

Delumpines said they immediately responded and proceeded to the ambush site together with personnel of the 1st Police Mobile Force Company, as well as coordinated with the military in the area for further investigation and ocular inspection.

The ambush on Friday afternoon is the first recorded gun ban violation in connection with the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan election on October 30.

Delumpines said investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the motive of the attack.
