One hurt in Surigao del Sur shooting

MANILA, Philippines — A man was injured after a still unidentified suspect shot at the van he was driving in Surigao del Sur Thursday evening, police said Friday.

Superintendent Martin Gamba, Caraga police spokesman, said Saturnino Buniel, 52, was driving a white Starex van (LYH 11O) with his three passengers along the National Highway in Goldamier, Barangay (village) Adlay, Carrascal around 8 p.m. Thursday, when the suspect wearing a bonnet opened fire at their vehicle with an M-16 some seven meters away.

Gamba said the group had just come from a repair job in Taganito village in Claver, Surigao del Norte, and was on their way back to the municipality of Cantilan.

The driver managed to navigate the vehicle to safety, but the van, Gamba said, was hit on the windshield and left window.

He said Buniel was injured after sustaining minor cuts on his head and arm due to fragments of broken glass from the windshield.

He was treated at the Rural Health Center of Carrascal.

The spokesman said investigation was ongoing as the van was brought to Carrascal Police Station.  Jamie Elona
