MANILA, Philippines — Earthquakes struck Ilocos Norte and Leyte on Thursday, registering a magnitude of 3.2 on the Richter scale, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The first tectonic temblor occurred at 10:09 a.m., September 21, in Nueva Era, Ilocos Norte. Its focal depth was two kilometers.

Based on Phivolcs’ bulletin, the quake was felt at Intensity IV in Nueva Era and Intensity III in Pinili town.

Phivolcs further recorded an Instrumental Intensity IV at Nueva Era.

The second tectonic earthquake, meanwhile, happened more than two hours later at 12:22 p.m. in Leyte province. It occurred at a depth of three kilometers.

Phivolcs said it logged an Instrumental Intensity IV in the area.

State seismologists explained that the reported earthquake intensities were based on the shaking that dwellers of the affected area experienced, while instrumental intensities were based on the ground motion detected by an accelerometer.

Phivolcs said it is not expecting damage and aftershocks from the two earthquakes.
