MANILA, Philippines — As Mayon Volcano continues to exhibit volcanic unrest, the Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday issued reminders to the public on what to do during an ash fall caused by a volcanic eruption.

Based on the volcano bulletin from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued Wednesday, Sept. 20, Mayon Volcano remains on Alert Level 3, signifying a “relatively high level of unrest.”

Alert Level 3 indicates that an eruption within weeks or even days could still be possible.

Ash Fall

According to the DOH in an advisory, individuals present during an ash fall should stay inside their houses and avoid going outside, if possible.

Affected individuals should also prepare emergency bags with enough food, water, clothes, first aid, and medicine.

The public is also reminded to monitor road situations, as well as to wait and listen to the advice of local authorities.

Furthermore, the DOH advises affected households to clean their roofs and drainage after the ash fall.

Respiratory care

During an eruption, the public is advised to refrain from opening doors and windows, as well as to use face masks — surgical masks, dusk masks, or wet handkerchiefs — to protect themselves from inhaling ash.

Those with breathing difficulties or those with asthma or allergies should also ensure that they have enough supply of medicines.

Magpakonsulta agad kung may problema sa paghinga (seek immediate consultation if you experience difficulty in breathing),” said the DOH.

Eye care

Regarding eye care, the DOH said those affected by ash fall should wear safety goggles to protect their eyes.

The DOH also recommended refraining from using contact lenses and avoiding eye scratching. If someone experiences discomfort, they should use running water to cleanse their eyes.

Likewise, those experiencing vision impairment or discomfort from the ash fall should consult their doctor.

Food Safety

Meanwhile, the DOH reminded the public to wash their hands thoroughly before eating or cooking.

Vegetables and fruits should also be washed under running water, said the DOH, while expiration dates for stored food should always be verified.

Additionally, water containers should also be sealed shut during an ash fall.
