4.7 magnitude earthquake jolts Oriental Mindoro

MANILA, Philippines — A 4.7 magnitude earthquake struck Victoria, Oriental Mindoro on Monday night.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake occurred at 7:02 p.m. It was tectonic in origin and had a 4-kilometer depth of focus.

Based on the agency’s earthquake information, the shaking was reportedly felt at Intensity III in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity II was likewise felt in Abra De Ilog and Calintaan in Occidental Mindoro and Bansud, City of Calapan, Naujan, and San Teodoro in Oriental Mindoro.

Intensity I was felt in Baco, Puerto Galera, and Socorro in Oriental Mindoro.

Phivolcs further indicated the following instrumental intensities:

Intensity III — Victoria, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity II — Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro

Intensity I — Boac, Marinduque, and  Abra De Ilog, Occidental Mindoro

The reported intensities were based on the shaking felt by people, while instrumental intensities were based on the ground motion detected by an accelerometer.

Phivolcs’ Science research assistant, Roschele Ablan, said that although they are expecting damage from the earthquake, none was reported as of this writing.

The agency also noted that they are not expecting aftershocks.
