MANILA, Philippines — Eighty-nine ranking police officials recently underwent on-the-spot drug tests as part of continuing efforts to clean up the ranks of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
The surprise drug tests were conducted during the PNP command conference on September 15 among officers from the Command Group, Directorial Staff, Regional Directors, and National Support Unit Directors. All tests yielded negative results.
“This surprise drug test underscores the PNP’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct among its members,” PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said in a statement Sunday.
“It also serves as a clear message that the organization is resolute in its efforts to combat illegal drugs and ensure the integrity of its leadership,” he added.
Earlier, the PNP reported that 24 police officers, including relieved Mandaluyong City police chief Col. Cesar Gerente, tested positive for illegal drug use. Their tests were conducted from January to August this year.
The PNP said 115,983 officers and personnel underwent the tests for illegal drug use during the period.
