MANILA, Philippines — The Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) of the Philippine National Police has warned against fraudulent online job offers called “task scams” targeting job seekers looking for an alternative source of income.
ACG director Brig. Gen. Sidney Hernia said the modus operandi of these scammers involved enticing job postings to lure victims. At first, individuals were expected to complete basic tasks that require no investment, such as liking posts, watching videos, or sharing content to earn income.
Once these tasks were done, commissions were given right away. With their trust already gained, they would then be given other tasks that require investment but with guaranteed commissions.
“As victims complete more tasks, the amount they are required to invest steadily increases. When they try to withdraw their earnings, the scammers invent technical issues, blaming victims and demanding more money to fix them,” the ACG said.
“Victims get trapped in this deceptive cycle with no refunds or withdrawals,” it added.
