Bridge joint repairs to affect traffic

MAJOR repair activities of expansion joints are scheduled on the second bridge—Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge—on May 2.

In an advisory, the Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH-7) advised the riding public of traffic congestion in routes leading to Mactan Cebu International Airport.

Also expected to draw congestion are routes from Lapu-Lapu City going to other places and those passing through Mandaue City.

Lapu-Lapu City mayor Paz Radaza said she was never informed about the repairs.

She said it would eventually disrupt the normal traffic flow at the bridge including both approaches at the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.

Radaza will meet the Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System (CTMS) and Lapu-Lapu City Police to discuss the repairs and their precautionary measures for dealing with the bridge joints repairs.

“I didn’t receive any communication, but it would definitely cause heavy traffic on the second bridge side. But I will assure that it would not be too heavy,” Radaza said.

She said she will order more traffic enforcers fielded on the affected routes.  The mayor also said they will install new traffic lights and operate this in lieu of the DPWH.

Radaza said they will install lights in routes like those leading in the international airport, at the intersection after Mandaue-Mactan Bridge and Marcelo B. Fernan Bridge and at barangay Basak, Marigondon and Buaya.
