Ched to appear in SWU nursing student suit

THE court hearing the civil suit that seeks to compel Southwestern University to show scholastic records of two Nursing students barred from graduating will invite a representative from the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) as amicus curiae or “friend of the court” in today’s hearing.

The students’ lawyer Joselito Alo said the CHED representative will supervise during the  demonstration of the computation of the grades of the two nursing students in today’s court session.

“Dili na siya witness namo (He is not our witness). But the court will ask the CHED, being the sole authority to supervise private schools,” Alo added.

Today, Juliet Salares, the students’ instructor, will demonstrate to the court how they computed the grades of complainant Jervis Dreamond Leonardo and Raymar delos Santos.

The two senior Bachelor of Nursing students were supposed to graduate last March 30 but were told nine days before the graduation rites they can’t join the ceremony because they had failing grades.

The students decided to take it to the court. They are seeking payment of P400,000 as moral and exemplary damages and P100,000 for legal fees.

“The contention here is whether they passed or not, the whole thing should be on the records,” said Alo.

According to Alo, they were already given a copy of the class records and quizzes last Tuesday. Today, they will see how the grades were computed and if it is supported by the records./UP MassComm Intern Jose Santino S. Bunachita
