MANILA, Philippines — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has adopted the nutritional standards of the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), which were set in 2015.

According to its memorandum on Wednesday, the FDA will now use the newer standards of the Recommended Energy Intake/Recommended Nutrient Intake (REI/RNI) from the 2015 Philippine Dietary Reference Intakes (PDRI) released by the DOST-FNRI.

This replaces the 2002 Recommended Energy and Nutrient Intake (RENI), which had been in use since 2005.

“In line with these changes, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shall use the new REI/RNI prescribed in the 2015 PDRI as the reference standard in nutrition labelling of processed food products, planning food fortification program, nutrition advocacy, and formulating laws, among others,” the circular said.

Under this new standard, manufacturers of processed food products will now use the percent REI/RNI in marking nutritional values, in place of the previous RENI.

The FDA also clarified that this change will take effect 15 days after its publication in the official Gazette or in a newspaper of general circulation.
