1.3 million candidates eye barangay, SK posts

MANILA, Philippines — At least 1.3 million aspirants will vie for some 672,000 positions in the Oct. 30 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said at least 1,316,265 aspirants filed their certificates of candidacy (COCs) in the past week.

The six-day period of filing of COCs ended on Sept. 2, except in typhoon-affected areas. The deadline was extended to Sept. 3 in Ilocos Norte and to Sept. 4 in Metro Manila and Abra.

A total of 672,016 positions are up for grabs in 42,001 barangays across the country since each barangay will have one barangay chair and seven barangay council members and one SK chairperson and seven SK council members.

The Comelec said at least 92,173 aspirants are running for barangay captains; 690,531 aspirants for 294,007 positions as barangay councilors; 85,816 aspirants for SK chairpersons; and 447,745 aspirants for 294,007 positions as SK members.

The official campaign period will run from Oct. 19 to Oct. 28. According to Comelec, 67,839,776 registered voters who are at least 18 years old may vote in the barangay elections while 23,254,313 registered voters who are 15 to 17 years old may vote in the SK elections.
