The number of candidates aspiring for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) posts has reached nearly 1 million, based on the latest Commission on Elections (Comelec) data.
As of 10 a.m. of Sept. 1, most of the 944,325 aspiring candidates were male at 66 percent, or 622,952, while females accounted for 34 percent, or 321,373.
The period for submission of certificate of candidacies (COCs) ends Sept. 2, after which, campaigning will be prohibited until Oct. 18. The campaign period will run from Oct. 19 to Oct. 28.
A total of 672,432 barangay and SK posts are up for grabs in the Oct. 30 polls.
However the Comelec extended up to Sept. 4 the filing of COCs for aspirants in Metro Manila and Abra province due to rains and flooding brought by Typhoon “Goring” (international name: Saola) and Tropical Cyclone “Hanna” (international name: Haikui) that led to the cancellation of government work.
Filing of COCs in Ilocos Norte province was also extended until Sept. 3. —Kathleen de Villa
