MANILA, Philippines — The Senate committee on public order and dangerous drugs is set to summon former police officer Wilfredo “Willie” Gonzales to a probe scheduled on Tuesday, September 5.
Gonzales was earlier identified by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) as the aggressor that pulled out and cocked a handgun at a cyclist over a road rage case near Mabuhay Rotonda in Quezon City.
Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, who also sits as the panel’s chairperson, confirmed to reporters that they will summon Gonzales despite claims that he and the cyclist have already settled the case.
“Yes, next week. The investigation in aid of legislation goes beyond the filing of appropriate charge against the erring gun holder,” said dela Rosa in a text message.
Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri and Senator Pia Cayetano earlier filed Senate Resolution No. 763, seeking an inquiry into the road rage incident.
Meanwhile, in a separate speech delivered during a plenary session, Senator Jinggoy Estrada likewise pushed for an investigation into the case, saying that the “culture of impunity” should not be tolerated, “especially on public roads.”
