MMDA looking for other options to shared bicycle – motorcycle lane plan

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday said it will look into other options instead of converting exclusive bicycle lanes in Edsa into shared lanes with motorcycles.

The MMDA previously announced that it was studying converting the exclusive bicycle lanes, saying that it has been “underutilized.”

In a press conference on Tuesday, however, MMDA chairman Romando Artes said that both motorcycle riders and cyclist groups opposed the plan during a stakeholders’ meeting.

“Walang nag-agree, that’s why we have to study it kung ano ‘yung mga options,” said Artes.

“Kasi ‘yun ang pinaka importante siguro na pagdesisyunan — kung pwede pagsamahin. Kung hindi pwede, ano ang pwede natin gawin na paraan?” he added.

(Because that’s probably the most important thing to decide on — if it can be combined. If not, what can we do?)

Meanwhile, Artes said that the MMDA is also currently studying the creation of elevated walkways and bike lanes to ease the traffic congestion along Edsa.
