MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued a show cause order against a former police officer who stepped out of his car, pulled out a handgun and threatened a biker in a road rage incident caught on video in Quezon City.
LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said a show cause order was issued over the weekend against Willy Gonzales, who was earlier identified by the Quezon City Police District (QCPD).
“We assure the public of our swift action on this matter,” Mendoza said in a statement on Sunday.
“In as much as we want to immediately impose sanctions based on the viral video, we have to observe and respect due process, and this includes a fair conduct of investigation.”
Gonzales already surrendered to QCPD, while the Philippine National Police also revoked his firearms permit.
Mendoza thanked the uploader of the video that went viral online over the weekend, adding that this has become the basis of the LTO’s swift action.
“Let us help together to make all our roads safe by running after abusive motorists,” he said.
“The abusive motorists in the roads will be emboldened when no one complains, [because] they do not get caught and punished,” he added in Filipino.
