Cebu’s lechon to vie as world’s best barbecue

A chef from Marco Polo Plaza Hotel will bring the famous Cebuano  lechon to the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest on May 12 in the US state of Memphis.

In an interview yesterday, Marco Polo Plaza Hotel press relations officer Kyra Cabaero said  they will be sending a one-man team for the competition.

“Chef Carlos Dingding Jr. will bring our famous lechon de leche to that competition. The pig will be sourced there but he will be bringing the herbs from here,” said Cabaero.

Cabaero said they are confident that Cebu’s lechon will be a good bet for the contest with its unique flavor that everyone loves.

“We should be proud of this product. We are very famous for it, so we thought of bringing it to the competition for the whole world to see and enjoy,” said Cabaero.

Cabaero said they still don’t know how many countries will be joining the competition.

“We are currently gathering more information about the competition and the participants,”  Cabaero said.

Cebu is famous for its lechon or roasted pig. World-famous food blogger Anthony Bourdain once wrote that he tasted the best roasted pig in the world here in Cebu.

Cabaero said that if our entry to this year’s World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest wins, it would strengthen Cebu’s brand as a must-visit destination in the world with its best-tasting lechon.
