MANILA, Philippines — A bill seeking to rename Agham and BIR roads in Quezon City as “Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago Avenue” was approved on the third and final reading in a Senate session on Monday.

House Bill No. 7413 drew 22 affirmative votes, zero negative votes, and no abstentions.

“We thank our colleagues for the swift passage of this measure which our former colleague deservedly earned. Malinaw na sumasalamin ito sa ating paghanga, hindi lamang sa mga nakamit kundi sa mga makabuluhang kontribusyon ni Senator Miriam sa ngalan ng lipunan noong siya ay nabubuhay pa,” said Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, sponsor of the measure.

(We thank our colleagues for the swift passage of this measure which our former colleague deservedly earned. It reflects our admiration, not only for the achievements but also for the significant contributions of Senator Miriam on behalf of society during her lifetime.)

“She has truly left a legacy that to this day serves as our guiding light in our quest toward providing our countrymen with a  kind of service she has espoused her whole life,” he added.

According to Revilla, Santiago will always be the “North Star” of the Senate. Santiago died at the age of 71 on September 29, 2016, from complications of lung cancer.

Meanwhile, all members of the chamber were made sponsors of the measure.
