NDRRMC: Latest count of people affected by typhoons Egay and Falcon tops 5M

NDRRMC says the latest count of people affected by typhoons Egay and Falcon surpasses 5 million

MANILA, Philippines — The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday reported that the latest count of people affected by typhoons Egay and Falcon, and the southwest monsoon has exceeded 5 million.

Based on its August 13 situational report, the NDRRMC said 5,293,546 individuals or 1,352,055 families residing in 5,535 barangays nationwide have been affected by the recent weather events.

This figure includes the 57,628 people displaced by the typhoons and southwest monsoon, which is locally known as habagat.

According to the NDRRMC, 43,584 displaced people were taking shelter outside evacuation centers, which currently accommodate 14,044.

The evacuation centers are located in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan), Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), and Region 6 (Western Visayas).

The NDRRMC likewise reported that it has validated the death of 12 people due to Egay and Falcon, and the typhoon-boosted southwest monsoon. It noted that it so far received reports on the death of 30 people and injury of 171.

It added that reports on missing people stood at nine.

To help the affected families, the NDRRMC said it distributed P587,570,950 worth of assistance as of August 13.
