PDLs in New Bilibid Prison told to surrender contraband until August 13

MANILA, Philippines — Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the New Bilibid Prison were given an ultimatum to surrender all their contraband until Sunday, August 13, or else the authorities will conduct daily greyhound operations.

Bureau of Corrections Director General Gregorio Pio Catapang Jr., in a statement on Saturday, said the ultimatum was set in place after a group of PDLs surrendered the following items the other day:

Catapang said they would thoroughly investigate how PDLs were able to conceal these items so that adjustments could be made in the current security inspection of the facility.

“I am appealing to other groups inside the national penitentiary to cooperate with us, to come forward and surrender their contraband because we will be relentless in our efforts. I assure you that it is not just a ningas cogon, we will not waver until we find those contrabands,” Catapang said.

PDLs were also told that those who will not engage in illegal activities are assured to “get out of jail as soon as they serve their minimum sentence” while those who will be caught with contraband after the deadline will “have to stay longer.”
