MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila dwellers were advised to gear up for dehydrating weather as the state weather bureau is seeing a sweltering Thursday in the capital region.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) specialist Benison Estareja said in a public forecast that Metro Manila’s heat index may hit nearly 40°C on August 10.

Pagasa defines heat index as the “apparent heat” that humans feel.

“Sa Metro Manila, ngayong araw ay mainit at maalinsangang panahon ang mararanasan between 28°C to 33°C. But the heat index ay posible pa ring umabot to almost 40°C. Sa mga lalabas po ng bahay ay magdala ng pananggalang sa init gaya ng payong o sumbrero,” said Estareja.

(In Metro Manila, today will be hot and humid weather between 28°C to 33°C. But the heat index is still possible to reach almost 40°C. Bring heat protection such as an umbrella or a hat for those leaving the house.)

As for the rest of Luzon, especially Northern and Central Luzon, predominantly fair weather may be experienced Thursday, according to Pagasa.

In Visayas and Mindanao, a slightly weakened southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, is anticipated to bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers.

“Sa ating mga kababayan sa Visayas, pinaka apektado ng habagat ang western portion so asahan ang maulap na kalangitan na sasamahan ng kalat-kalat na pag-ulan. Mag-ingat sa flash floods sa landslides,” Estareja said.

(For our compatriots in the Visayas, the western portion is most affected by the southwest monsoon, so expect cloudy skies accompanied by scattered rain. Be careful of flash floods in landslides.)

He further warned that rain showers may be experienced in Visayas’s eastern and central portions on Thursday morning due to the southwest monsoon.

He added that rain may likewise occur in the Zamboanga Peninsula, most parts of the Bangsamoro Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, and the province of Lanao del Norte.

Meanwhile, no gale warning was raised in any part of the archipelago due to the slight weakening of the southwest monsoon.
