MANILA, Philippines –Another inmate died inside the Maximum Security Compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) after a heated altercation with a fellow inmate last Aug. 6.
In a press statement Monday, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) that supervises NBP and six other penal colonies around the country identified the inmate as Romelito Dural, 50. He was convicted on 2017 for two count of attempted homicide.
BuCor said Dural was declared dead on arrival at the NBP hospital after suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Based on an incident report, Dural had a heated argument with Mark Mengullo, who was transferred to Bilibid in 2022 after he was found guilty of murder.
Mengullo surrendered to the BuCor office and admitted stabbing Dural.
“Mengullo claimed that he was being bullied by Dural for a long time and he can no longer take it that is the reason why he took the matter into his own hands,” read BuCor’s statement.
Mengullo is currently under safekeeping at the Office of the Shifting Unit, MaxSeCom awaiting confinement order.
Last month, an inmate was shot to death following an argument between two other inmates.
