MANILA, Philippines–Authorities seized an estimated P30 million worth of expired frozen meat and meat products from China and Germany during a raid on an illegal storage facility in Caloocan City.
Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan said the warehouse, situated at Tuna Street, Kaunlaran Village, was found to contain five container vans full of illegally-imported and expired products.
The meat products were found to have expired as far back as 2021, Malapitan said, adding that they were also found to be contaminated with bacteria, which could pose a health risk to consumers.
“These illegal products are not only a health risk, but they also hurt our local businesses,” he said.
The raid was conducted by the City Veterinary Department, in partnership with agents from the Bureau of Customs, the Department of Agriculture, and the National Meat Inspection Service.
The Customs is set to file cases against the illegal importers once they are identified. Meantime, Along has directed the CVD to ensure the safe disposal of confiscated meat products.
“We are already investigating who owns these products and this warehouse. We will strive to ensure that this kind of meat does not reach our markets for the benefit of all ‘Batang Kankaloo’,” Along said.
