Rider dead in motorcycle-bus collision in Quezon province

LUCENA CITY — A motorcycle rider died early Tuesday, Aug. 1, after his vehicle collided with a commuter bus along the Maharlika Highway in Tayabas City in Quezon province.

The Quezon police said that Henry Calabano, 57, was traveling at 12:10 a.m. along the highway in Barangay Isabang when his motorcycle collided head-on with an oncoming Raymond passenger bus driven by Joel Ortinero.

The motorcycle and the rider were consequently run over by the bus, the report said.

Calabano suffered a fatal head injury and died on the spot. The report did not specify if he was wearing a crash helmet.

Wearing crash helmets for all riders of two-wheeled motor vehicles is mandated under Republic Act No. 10054 or the motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

Ortinero was taken into custody as the police are conducting further investigations.
