The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will conduct a plebiscite in Bacoor City in Cavite province on July 29 to decide whether to reduce the number of barangays from 49 to 23.
Bacoor City’s 114,416 registered voters will be asked whether they approve of City Ordinance No. 275-2023. Under the ordinance, 44 out of the current 49 barangays will be merged into 18 barangays, while the remaining five barangays will be renamed.
Voters may cast their votes from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in 22 voting centers. Comelec Chair George Garcia said the Bacoor plebiscite results will impact preparations for the nationwide barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections on Oct. 30.
Garcia said if majority of Bacoor voters choose to ratify the merger and renaming of barangays, Comelec has to reprint the official ballots.
The poll chief added that they also have to reduce the current 223 clustered precincts in the city if Bacoor will have fewer barangays. —DONA Z. PAZZIBUGAN
