MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wants a whole-of-society approach to tackling HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.
That was part of Marcos’ second State of the Nation Address (Sona) at the Batasan Hills Complex in Quezon City.
“The whole of society must exert efforts to suppress the alarming rise of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. To stem the tide, the strategic plan is to ensure early diagnosis and treatment, and ample testing sites and medications. Our healthcare system is undergoing structural changes,” Marcos said.
HIV attacks the body’s immune system, which can lead to AIDS. It can be acquired through the exchange of bodily fluids, including sexual intercourse. The disease has largely been stigmatized as a sexually transmitted disease, although it is not the only way to get infected.
Marcos also said that public health facilities have increased in both number and capability.
“Last year, more than 3,400 projects were completed. To improve capacity for specialized medical treatment, specialty centers in various fields are being established and integrated into our government hospitals. In the last year, additional 60 specialty centers have been opened to the public,” he said.
