MANILA, Philippines — Over 5,500 individuals were stranded in various ports due to the rough seas brought about by Typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri), the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said on Monday.
As of 12:00 p.m., the PCG said that 5,584 passengers, truck drivers and cargo helpers are stranded – 3,095 in nine ports in the Bicol region; 1,767 in five ports in Eastern Visayas and 722 in 14 ports in the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) region.
A total of 1,246 rolling cargoes were also stranded in the said regions.
Meanwhile, 48 vessels and 61 motor bancas were also taking shelter in several ports in the same areas.
State meteorologists on Monday raised a gale warning over the eastern seaboards of Luzon and the Visayas, where rough to very rough seas with 3.1 to 5.5 meter-high waves are expected.
As of 11:00 am, the center of Egay was plotted some 525 kilometers east of Baler, Aurora, packing maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gustiness of 185 kilometers per hour,, according to the state weather bureau.
