LUCENA CITY — A drug suspect with a pending warrant of arrest was shot dead late Sunday by a motorcycle-riding gunman in Sariaya town in Quezon province.

Mark Joseph Marco, 33, and Bryan Jay Layug, 37, both auto mechanics, were fixing a car inside a subdivision in Barangay Concepcion 1 at 10:20 p.m. when two men aboard a motorcycle arrived, the Quezon police said in a report on Monday, July 24.

The back-rider, who was wearing a black hoodie, disembarked and, without provocation, repeatedly shot the two with a handgun of a still unknown caliber.

The gunman sped off after the shooting and left Marco dead on the spot.

Rescuers rushed Layug, who also suffered bullet wounds, to the United Candelaria Doctors Hospital in neighboring Candelaria town for treatment.

Police found out that Marco had a pending warrant of arrest from Candelaria police for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Investigators also recovered from Marco’s bag a plastic sachet of “shabu” (crystal meth) weighing .15 grams and sniffing paraphernalia.

An investigation was ongoing to establish the motive behind the shooting incident.

Investigators were also still conducting background checks on Layug.

Police launched a manhunt operation to arrest the gunman and his cohort.

Meanwhile, the Sariaya police arrested three rookie drug pushers in a buy-bust operation around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday in Barangay Mamala 1.

The arrested suspects – Edison Baasis, 36; Jan Rey Noel, 30; and Jessie de Guzman, 35 – yielded three sachets of meth with a street value of P117,376.

The report said the three were not on the police drug watch list.

They were detained and would face charges for violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. INQ
