Classes, gov’t work suspended in Bacoor City due to Egay, transport strike

LUCENA CITY — Classes in public and private schools as well as work in government offices in Bacoor City, Cavite province on Monday, July 24, are suspended due to the scheduled transport strike and Tropical storm “Egay” (international name: Doksuri).

Mayor Strike Revilla in Memorandum Circular 002-2023 issued on Sunday said that “…in view of the forecasted inclement weather brought about by Tropical Storm “Egay” and the scheduled seventy- two (72) hour transport strike in Metro Manila, classes in all levels, in both public and private schools, as well as work in government offices in the City of Bacoor are hereby suspended on Monday.”

The mayor said the class suspension was upon the recommendation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).

“However, agencies whose functions involve providing essential public services and are directly involved in disaster/emergency management operations…shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services,” Revilla said.

The suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective management, the mayor added.

A copy of the order was posted on the Facebook page of the City Government of Bacoor on Sunday at around 3:30 p.m.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Egay has intensified into a severe tropical storm while moving westward over the Philippine Sea.

According to the 11 a.m. Sunday weather bulletin, Egay was last monitored 610 kilometers (km) east of Daet, Camarines Norte, moving 15 kilometers per hour (kph) and carrying maximum sustained winds of 95 kph and gusts of up to 115 kph.

“Current forecast scenario shows that the highest wind signal that may be hoisted will be Wind Signal No. 3 or 4, potentially over extreme Northern Luzon,” the agency said.

It added that the severe tropical storm is expected to reach the typhoon category within 24 hours and may strengthen into a super typhoon by Tuesday.

Several transport groups will also stage a three-day transport strike starting Monday to protest the government’s Public Utility Vehicle modernization program.
