Bill seeks nonviolent ways to discipline kids

A lawmaker has pushed for a positive parenting program to help parents discipline their children with “affable and nonviolent” parenting tools while respecting their human rights and dignity.

House welfare of children committee chair Rep. Angelica Natasha Co has filed House Bill No. 8306, or the Positive Parenting of Children Act, to implement programs promoting positive parenting. Co cited the 2022 report of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child on the “high prevalence” of all forms of violence against children in the Philippines, including corporal punishment, bullying and abuse in schools, domestic and sexual violence and exploitation.

The measure stated that no child will be subjected to physical, humiliating or degrading acts as a form of punishment in homes, schools, institutions, alternative care systems, juvenile welfare systems, places of worship, workplace and other settings where there is contact with a child. —Julie M.
