MANILA, Philippines — A leadership shakeup in the Senate is unlikely, according to Senator Cynthia Villar.
Villar, who once vied for Senate President but later conceded to Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, was asked on Friday if she sees any looming change in the Senate leadership.
“Perhaps not. I haven’t heard anything about it, unless I’m really just not listening,” Villar said.
Villar said changing the Senate leadership when the second regular session of the 19th Congress begins Monday will only distract the chamber from fulfilling its agenda.
“A change in leadership would be difficult. Such an adjustment would eat up our time, and we already have a lot of things to do. [We need to] make good use of our time,” the senator said.
Asked if she was satisfied with the performance of Zubiri as Senate President, Cynthia Villar replied: I have no complaints. I’m really not one to complain.
Since assuming the Senate presidency, Zubiri had stumbled across a number of alleged moves to unseat him.
He has repeatedly quashed the rumored ouster plots, which was purportedly triggered by the supposed low productivity of the Senate, and his position against the bid for economic constitutional reform at this time.
Aside from Cynthia Villar, other senators had also expressed trust in Zubiri as they likewise dismissed any talk of plans to replace the chamber’s chief. (with reports from Bea Alicia Delariarte, INQUIRER.net trainee)
