Phivolcs detects increased seismic activity in Kanlaon Volcano
MANILA, Philippines — State seismologists on Friday recorded an increase in the number of volcanic earthquakes in Kanlaon Volcano in Negros.
“This is a notice of increased seismic activity at Kanlaon Volcano,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in its advisory.
Phivolcs said the volcano logged 35 volcanic earthquakes from 10:00 p.m. on Thursday to 9:06 a.m. on Friday.
According to Phivolcs, these tremors ranged from magnitude 0.9 to magnitude 2.3, occurring 12 to 15 kilometers beneath the summit crater.
Meanwhile, the volcanic sulfur dioxide gas emission from the summit crater averaged 786 metric tons a day as of Tuesday, slightly higher than the average of 566 metric tons since March 2023, according to state volcanologists.
