MANILA, Philippines —  The management or operators of motorcycle ride hailing applications should impose administrative sanction on riders who violate traffic rules, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Thursday.

The MMDA is also scheduled to start imposing a P500 fine on riders seeking shelter from the rain or heat under footbridges and overpasses starting August 1.

“We urge motorcycle ride hailing firms to impose administrative sanctions on their partner motorcycle riders who violate traffic rules,” said MMDA acting chairman Don Artes during a press briefing.

Artes pointed out that that sheltering under footbridges and flyovers is dangerous to the riders and other motorists and likewise causes traffic congestion.

Representatives of ride-hailing applications such as Grab and Joyride assured MMDA that they will remind their drivers to strictly follow traffic rules and regulations.

Artes said gasoline station operators have already expressed support for MMDA in putting up tents as temporary shelters for riders.

“Gasoline station operators have asked us to submit our proposal and guidelines on the use of the tents to address safety and operational concerns,” said Artes.
