Potential cyclone off Mindanao may traverse, make landfall in Luzon — Pagasa

MANILA, Philippines — The low pressure area (LPA) off Mindanao, once it develops into a tropical cyclone, may traverse or make landfall in Luzon, but the state weather bureau on Thursday said “there is still high uncertainty” regarding its definite track.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Patrick Del Mundo, in a public forecast, laid out the possible track scenarios for the LPA being monitored.

“Regarding sa magiging track ng LPA ay mataas pa rin ang uncertainty sa magiging track nito. Ngunit sa buwan ng July ay inaasahan natin na ang mga bagyo o sama ng panahon na pumapasok sa Philippine Area of Responsibility, usually ay nag la-landfall ito sa Northern o Central Luzon at may tiyansa rin itong mag recurve papunta sa Japan area bago pa ito tumama sa ating kalupaan,” said Del Mundo.

(There is still high uncertainty regarding the LPA’s future track. But in the month of July, tropical cyclones or weather disturbances that enter PAR usually make landfall in Northern or Central Luzon and it also has the chance to recurve towards the Japan area before it hits the country’s landmass.)

“Sa ngayon, ito ang nakikita nating possibilities regarding sa magiging track nitong sama ng panahon na ating binabantayan,” he added.

(Right now, these are the possibilities we see regarding the track of the weather disturbance that we are monitoring.)

The LPA was last seen 715 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte. According to Del Mundo, it may develop into Tropical Depression Egay within 24 to 48 hours.

Meanwhile, this LPA will continue to dump rain and cause cloudy skies in Visayas, Romblon, Sorsogon, Masbate, Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Provinces, Camiguin, Agusan del Norte, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands on Thursday.

Residents of these areas were advised to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides during moderate to at times heavy rains.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country may expect generally fair weather conditions, but intermittent rain showers may still occur due to localized thunderstorms and the trough of the LPA.

Pagasa’s forecast temperature range for the country’s key areas and cities on Thursday are as follows:
