MANILA, Philippines — A total of 7,451 drivers were apprehended by the Land Transportation Office-National Capital Region (LTO-NCR) field personnel, along with other law enforcement agencies for traffic law violations in the first half of 2023.
The LTO-NCR said the 7,451 motorists were apprehended in various regular operations conducted by its field personnel, the Philippine National Police, and the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Eight hundred thirty seven drivers were apprehended for operating vehicles with faulty accessories, devices, equipment, and parts, violating the provisions of Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.
LTO-NCR chief Roque Verzosa said in a statement on Sunday that operating vehicles with faulty components, which involves malfunctioning headlights, tail lights, brake systems, steering mechanisms, airbags, seat belts, horns, and wipers, among others, may pose a threat when on the road or cause accidents.
A total of 1,752 drivers were apprehended for failure to wear the prescribed seat belt device or protective motorcycle helmet, while 12 were also apprehended for violating RA 10666 (children’s safety under the MC Act).
Versoza said that 2,176 of the apprehended drivers have so far attended a seminar of traffic laws and safety under the guidance of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista and LTO OIC-Assistant Secretary Atty. Hector A. Villacorta.
