MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (Paws) is “now taking steps in filing a case” of animal cruelty against a security guard who was caught on video throwing a puppy from a pedestrian bridge.
“The guard’s behavior and the act of killing the puppy is certainly what the Animal Welfare Act seeks to punish,” the group said in a statement.
“Paws is committed to file a case and hold accountable the person responsible for this horrific cruelty,” it added.
On Tuesday, several social media users called for justice for the puppy after the security officer allegedly threw the animal to drive the youngsters away.
The puppy was rushed to a nearby clinic but eventually died.
The security guard, identified as Jojo Malecdem, has since been dismissed. At the same time, the management of SM Supermalls said they would no longer allow his service at any of their malls nationwide.

Paws said it received more than 190 e-mails from concerned citizens about this incident.
“We are as outraged as you are, and we are taking steps in filing this case with the help of a witness,” Paws said.
“Paws condemns in the strongest possible terms this act of cruelty,” it continued. “We are demanding an immediate investigation of this incident, and we have gotten in touch with witnesses so that we can file a case.”
