MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez honored the late Senate Secretary and Philippine Constitution Association (Philconsa) Secretary General, Dr. Hezel Gacutan, for his extraordinary service during a necrological service Wednesday at Manila Memorial Park.
Romualdez, who also presides over Philconsa, praised Gacutan as “a truly remarkable man,” an outstanding civil servant, and a key figure in Philippine politics. Gacutan’s tenure as Senate Secretary extended through the terms of Senate Presidents Neptali A. Gonzales, Marcelo B. Fernand, and Blas F. Ople.
“He served during a time of immense change, a period when our nation grappled with critical issues of political and economic development. He held the Senate’s institutional memory, ensuring that the wisdom and experience of our past informed our present and future decisions,” Romualdez said.
In his role as Philconsa Secretary General, Gacutan was devoted to advocating democratic principles and enhancing constitutional understanding, according to Romualdez.
“But, beyond his illustrious professional accomplishments, what truly set Dr. Gacutan apart was his unwavering integrity, his tireless dedication, and his profound love for our nation,” Romualdez noted.
Romualdez went on to commend Gacutan’s ability to respect history while keeping a progressive perspective, stating that his contributions have permanently shaped the nation’s political scene.
To honor Gacutan’s legacy, Romualdez called for the continuation of Gacutan’s indefatigable pursuit of democracy, justice, and national progress. This, he said, will ensure that Gacutan’s contributions will inspire and guide future leaders.
“Dr. Gacutan, thank you for your exemplary service and for the lessons you’ve imparted. Your life and work will forever be etched in the heart of our nation,” Romualdez concluded.
