MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Human Rights (CHR) is conducting an investigation into the bombing of a lawyer’s car in Davao city.
The commission said Davao city police had reported that Attorney Alberto Magulta’s Honda CRV exploded a few minutes after he parked it outside his office.
The blast happened in One Oasis Condominium building along Ecoland Drive in Matina Village at around 9:30 a.m. on June 15.
“A closed-circuit television footage showed two men attaching an object under the car prior to the explosion,” CHR reported.
Through its regional office in Davao, the commission condemned the incident and similar attacks against lawyers and other legal workers.
“No case of harassment, intimidation, and violence against legal professionals must be left unresolved to ensure an enabling and safe environment for those (who are) working for justice,” stated CHR.
“This case is another reminder of the continuing need to ensure greater protection for lawyers and all agents of the law, who are crucial to a functional justice system and in the protection of human rights,” it added
Magulta had allegedly received death threats in connection with some “high-profile cases” he is handling.
CHR said police viewed the incident as an act of harassment.
