MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Population and Development has formally changed its acronym from Popcom to its proper form CPD.

Commission’s Executive Director Lisa Grace Bersales announced this new development as part of the agency’s rebranding.

“Our Board of Commissioners … fully supports the agency’s rebranding to CPD from this point forward, in full adherence to a legislation previously enacted by a chief executive,” Bersales said in a statement on Tuesday.

Bersales said this change was based on Executive Order 71, s. 2018 signed by former president Rodrigo Duterte.

The EO has a specific section ordering the change of the commission’s  acronym to CPD.

Also, the EO directed the reattachment of the commission to the National Economic and Development Authority or NEDA.

Previously, the commission was known as the Population Commission — hence, the acronym Popcom —  before its mandate expanded to include population development.

“The way Filipinos know and call us may change from an old abbreviation, yet our mandate and brand of service in empowering families and communities will remain steadfast and far-reaching — the way we have made our mark for 55 years, and as we carry on for the next 55 and beyond,” Bersales said.—Bea Alicia Delariarte, trainee
