Gunning for 2016 polls? Escudero tells aspirants to learn lessons of 2010

MANILA, Philippines – Don’t count Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero out yet in the 2016 presidential derby.

Although he is keeping a tight lid on his plans in 2016, Escudero warned on Thursday that an early declaration of intention to run for president is no longer a guarantee for victory.

“Let’s learn what happened in 2010; those early birds ended up losers,” Escudero said during a regular forum at the Senate.

Oh the other hand, he said “the latecomer” emerged victorious.”

President Benigno Aquino III was the last to declare his presidential bid in 2010 and he defeated former President Joseph Estrada, Senator Manny Villar, former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva.

“This not a sprint contest. To me it’s still early to talk about 2016,” the senator added.

So asked if he would declare last in 2016, Escudero simply flashed a smile and gave no definite word.

Pressed again, the senator repeated; “It’s too early to even talk seriously about 2016.”

But asked if he desires to become president of the Philippines, he said: “Wishing is one thing; daydreaming is another thing.”

But Escudero pointed out that even a barangay captain dreams to become a mayor or president.
