MOST of the youth spend their summer vacation at the beach or other recreation areas and have fun with their families and friends.
But for the youth of barangay Dumlog in Talisay City, southern Cebu, they make use of their summer engaging in community works.
Last March 25, the Sangguniang Kabataan of Dumlog launched its Kabataan sa Kaugmaon sa Kalikupan (KKK) project, which will educate the people especially the youth on the proper implementation of the Solid Waste Management Law.
“We have come up with the project because it is very important for the youth to be taught on proper management of solid waste and to give importance to the environment,” said barangay Dumlog SK chairman Franklin Basillote.
The project also includes nightly visit in sitios once or twice a month to conduct seminars, to clean the area and to plant trees.
Basillote said that instead of letting the youth spend their time in insignificant activities, why not get them involved in activities that will give them awareness about the environment.
“The youth in our barangay became more careful with their actions; they became more aware, responsible and disciplined on the proper way of disposing their garbage,” he added.
Basillote encouraged the youth from other barangays to make projects or activities that will help resolve environmental problems such as solid waste management and climate change. /UP Cebu Masscom student Norren M. Mangmang
