MANILA, Philippines —Permanent evacuation centers are needed for the long term amid the Mayon volcano’s unrest, Office of Civil Defense (ODC) spokesperson Diego Mariano said on Friday.
Staying far away from the active volcano is one way to avoid harm, according to Mariano.
“Hanggang maari, gawa tayo ng bago nilang pwedeng paglagyan, or mga mas permanent na evacuation center na pwede lagyan temporarily pag umabot tayo sa pag-extend ng danger zone,” said Mariano during the Laging Handa public Briefing.
(As much as possible, we should set up new places they could stay in or more permanent evacuation centers they can stay in temporarily if the danger zone is extended.)
Mayon volcano’s permanent danger zone is currently seven kilometers.
“Ang pinaka long term plan talaga is ma-relocate talaga ang ating kababayan na malayo sa permanent danger zone,” Mariano said.
(The plan for the long term is to relocate the people well away from the permanent danger zone.)
Mariano asked the affected residents to cooperate with authorities and follow orders should evacuation be necessary.
