Whistle-blower justice Jose Sabio, 71

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines—The Court of Appeals Associate Justice who revealed that he was being bribed P10 million to inhibit from the case of Meralco and the Government Service Insurance System died on Tuesday, April 17 due to a lingering illness.

Court Administrator Jose Midas Marquez said Jose Sabio, brother of former Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) chairman Camilo Sabio, died at age 71 in his hometown Cagayan De Oro City.

Sabio’s expose led to an investigation and eventual dismissal of a Court of Appeals Justice. Sabio himself was suspended for two months while two justices were reprimanded and another justice was admonished.

Justice Sabio’s remains lie in state at his residence in Cagayan de Oro City. Interment will be on April 23, 2012 at the Divine Shepherd Memorial Gardens in the said city.
