Boracay Run escapes Cagayan Rising Suns in D-League

THE BORACAY Rum Waves survived an upset attempt by the Cagayan Rising Suns as they won by the skin of their teeth, 67-65, in the PBA D-League Foundation Cup yesterday at the Trinity University of Asia.

The Waves nearly lost a 14-point lead in the fourth period and the game appeared to be headed for overtime as the Rising Suns got possession of the ball with just eight seconds remaining after a steal by James Castro.

When play resumed, Castro attacked the lane, drew a double team, but managed to pass the ball to the wide-open Roger Malig-on. The power forward quickly went for what looked like an easy layup but missed, the ball hitting the lower lip of the rim as time expired.

Kenneth Acibar scored 16 points to show the way for the Waves, who notched their second straight victory after a 0-3  (win-loss) start.

In the other game, Erase Plantcenta subdued Jr. Powerade, 81-69, to snap a two-game skid and stayed in the hunt for a quarterfinal spot.

Former Mapus standout Allan Mangahas scored 21 points to show the way for Erase Plantcenta, which also got 20 points from latest recruit June Dizon, 19 from Jett Vidal and 10 from Jayvee Ferreria.

With their second win in five games, the Erasers are tied with the Jr. Tigers and the Waves for sixth to eighth  spots. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
