DAVAO CITY – A tricycle driver who allegedly robbed a female college student was shot dead in a shootout with the police here Saturday night.
Mark Pabellon, 29, succumbed to gunshot wounds in Barangay Bato, Toril District at around 9:45 p.m., according to Maj. Catherine Dela Rey, Davao City Police Office spokesperson.
Dela Rey said the operation against Pabellon, a resident of Brgy. Crossing Bayabas, Toril, and driver of a tricycle contraption locally known as payong-payong, was hatched after a 24-year-old student of Rizal Memorial Colleges reported to Toril police station past 8 p.m. that he held her up at gunpoint while on her way home.
The victim alleged that the suspect forcibly took her bag containing identification cards, receipts, a mobile phone and P3,185 cash, before speeding off.
The suspect allegedly refused to surrender to pursuing police officers and instead pulled out a handgun and opened fire, triggering the brief gunfight, Dela Rey said.
Pabellon died upon arrival at a local hospital.
Recovered at the scene were the student’s bag and its contents, a loaded caliber .38 revolver and ammunition. Six sachets of shabu were likewise recovered from the slain suspect.
