/ 08:11 PM June 24, 2011

ILOILO CITY, Philippines —Strong swirling winds believed to be from a tornado demolished 24 houses and damaged 25 others in a village in Barotac Nuevo town in Iloilo Friday afternoon.

Barotac Nuevo Mayor Hernani Biron in a telephone interview said no one was injured when the supposed twister struck Barangay Guintas at around 1:30 p.m.

Biron said most of the houses were empty at the time twister struck because the children were in school and their parents were at work.

The victims, who were left homeless, transferred to their relatives or in nearby schools. The municipal government has also provided them with food and other forms of assistance.
