QC mayor wants Quirino-Mindanao rotunda removed

/ 03:40 PM April 16, 2012

MANILA, Philippines—The Quezon City government has asked the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority to remove its rotunda at the intersection of Quirino Highway and Mindanao Avenue.

Citing mounting complaints of heavy traffic from motorists traversing the area, Mayor Herbert Bautista appealed to the MMDA to reconsider the rotunda it installed.

“We should have been consulted prior to the construction of the rotunda. The rotunda defeated the purpose of road widening along Quirino highway,” he said.

In a statement, Bautista said he has tasked Novaliches District Center head Tadeo Palma and public order and safety chief Elmo San Diego to coordinate with the MMDA.

Palma and San Diego will talk to the MMDA to study whether to continue allowing the rotunda’s use or to look for alternatives to improve traffic flow along Quirino Highway.

Quirino Highway is considered a major road for motorists going to the northbound portion of Quezon City, parts of Caloocan City and San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

Palma said they will still continue experimenting with the use of the rotunda despite the initial complaints, at least until the opening of the new school year.

“If after resumption of classes, the rotunda will worsen the flow of traffic in the area, the city government will have to insist that the rotunda be removed,” Palma said.
