The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) gears up for possible search and rescue operations as super typhoon Mawar approaches the Philippines. The howler is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility early Saturday.
MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) on Friday said it will tap over 800 police officers to assist in the search and rescue operations as Super Typhoon Mawar approaches.
NCRPO regional director Police Major General Edgar Alan Okubo said they will initially field 710 officers with background and experience in search and rescue, while another 100 personnel are on standby and will be promptly deployed should the need arise.
“Our countrymen could count on the police who are prepared to respond and help in times of need,” Okubo said in a statement.
“However, let us be ready and alert so we can be sure of our family’s safety,” he added.
Okubo said the NCRPO has also prepared food packs, medicine and water to be distributed to evacuees.
Super typhoon Mawar is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) early Saturday morning, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Mawar, which will be given the local name Betty once it enters PAR, now packs a maximum wind speed of 205 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness of up to 250 kph, Pagasa said.
