MANILA, Philippines—Local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila are bracing for the impact of Super Typhoon Mawar, which is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Although Mawar, to be renamed Betty upon entering the Philippine area of responsibility, is not forecast to directly hit the Philippine landmass in the coming days, it is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon, thereby triggering rains and thunderstorms.

In flood-prone Marikina City, authorities have preemptively stationed rescue boats and equipment in strategic parts of the city, including Provident Village, Homeowners’ Drive in Barangay Sto. Niño, A. Santos Street in Barangay Tumana, and Bayabas Street in Barangay Nangka.

“All government offices have their own roles as part of the City of Marikina’s system or protocols and are on standby, including those designated in the kitchen where food will be prepared for evacuees,” said the Marikina Public Information Office in a Facebook post.

Simultaneously, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Office has performed its Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment for the approaching super typhoon, resulting in a “blue alert” being issued in the city.

“This involves readying our rescuers and the necessary equipment for saving people. We encourage the public to stay updated by following news from legitimate agencies of the local and national government,” the Manila DRRM Office advised.

The Quezon City DRRM Council reported that some residents have already voluntarily evacuated, with search and rescue personnel also gearing up for operations.

Caloocan City Mayor Along Malapitan confirmed that the LGU has responders on standby for Mawar.
