Barangay Ermita in Cebu City is now equipped with a new building.
This after the Visayan Electric Company (Veco) turned over a newly constructed two-storey multi purpose building to the barangay as part of their corporate social responsibility program last Feb. 28.
Completed in two months after the signing of agreement in Aug. 25, 2011, the P1.5 million building will become host to Ermita’s day care centers and health center.
Veco executive vice president and chief operating officer Jaime Jose Aboitiz expressed gratitude to barangay Ermita for being part of the power company’s history. Veco has been situated in Ermita since 1905.
“We have been looking for a way to give back to you. This project is our way of helping the community,” Aboitiz said.
He also said the multi-purpose building would not be the last project for the barangay.
Aboitiz Foundation Inc. managing trustee Augusto Carpio III asked the barangay to take good care of the facility.
Ermita barangay captain Antonieto Flores expressed gratitude to Veco, saying the donation will strengthen two of their major thrusts, education and health and sanitation.
Flores said the children in their barangay need not go to other day care centers to study.
He said the nearest elementary school in their barangay, Cebu City Central School on P. Del Rosario Street, is quite far and dangerous for the children.
Flores also asked Veco and the Aboitiz Foundation to help them build their very own elementary school soon.
During the occasion, Veco also donated sustainable tables and chairs for the new day care centers.
Also present during the turnover ceremony were Veco’s vice president for administration Ricardo Lacson Jr., corporate communications manager Ethel Natera and community relations manager Eric Ching, city officials, barangay officials, teachers, day care students and their parents.
