MANILA, Philippines — Former Senator and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief of staff Rodolfo Biazon is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) as he recovers from a “bad case of pneumonia,” announced Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri.

Zubiri made the announcement at the start of the Senate session on Wednesday.

“If I may, may we also dedicate our prayer today to a distinguished colleague of ours, Senator Biazon, who is in the ICU trying to recover from a bad case of pneumonia,” Zubiri said.

Senator Alan Peter Cayetano led the prayer for the former senator.

The 88-year-old Biazon served as AFP chief of staff during the Cory Aquino administration.

He was a senator in the Ninth Congress from 1992 to 1995 and elected again in 1998.

In 2021, Biazon voiced his concern over the “confusing and dangerous” stance of the country on the West Philippine Sea under the Rodrigo Duterte administration.

He had called for a meeting by the National Security Council.

He had asked the council to develop a “clear and united national position on this.”
